It would seem that an unused room in your home is wasting energy by putting out cool air into that vacant area of the home. When in fact that is not the case and can actually cause more harm than good. Keep reading below as we explain why closing air conditioning vents is not a good idea.
Your central air conditioning system was installed to cool and heat the whole home. This means that the contractor who installed your system ensured that the flow of air was balanced throughout the home to give a consistent and accurate temperature. Closing vents can actually hinder the balance of air flow and cause a build up of pressure in the system. This will actually increase energy consumption and cost and can cause premature breakdown of your HVAC system.
The ductwork of your air conditioning system is a large configuration of connected tunnels (plenum) and vents. All of this is connected and sealed to the HVAC unit. When vents in some rooms of the home are closed the increased pressure in this ductwork can create leaks. Leaks in the ductwork can create more problems in the home like dust and further wastes in energy as the the air will leak into the attic.
If you close the air conditioning vents in your house, you will actually use more electricity because you'll need to run the AC unit longer to cool down the space. “If you turn off the air conditioning vent, you won't be able to cool the room and the system will work harder to keep the temperature inside the home constant.” according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s website.
So while closing vents is not the way to save money you should consider getting your HVAC system checked regularly to ensure it’s running as efficiently as possible.
On cooler days If you want to save energy without sacrificing comfort, open the windows and let some fresh air into your home. That way, you won't be paying for the cost of running your air conditioner, and you'll feel cooler inside.
